Why is everyone covering up their laptop cameras?

– by Danny Yadron in San Francisco @dannyyadron Monday 6 June 2016

“Stickers and slides serve to ease concerns that spooks could be watching our every move, as even the FBI director says he puts tape on his camera

For the past half decade, the technology industry has been racing to build better cameras into the hardware we use every day.

Yet the surveillance age has inspired an odd cottage industry battling against this trend: a glut of cheap stickers and branded plastic slides designed to cover up the front-facing cameras on phones, laptops and even televisions.

For years, security researchers have shown that hackers can hijack the cameras to spy on whomever is on the other end. To put that in perspective, think of all the things your devices have seen you do.

Such warnings have finally caught on. Last month, the FBI director, James Comey, told an audience: “I put a piece of tape over the camera because I saw somebody smarter than I am had a piece of tape over their camera.”

The corporate swag company Idea Stage Promotions describes its Webcam Cover 1.0 as “the HOTTEST PROMOTIONAL ITEM on the market today”. The cable channel USA Networks sent journalists a “Mr Robot” webcam cover for the popular hacker thriller’s upcoming season.

I agree, to a point. But the theory is that stolen images from a webcam could be used by trolls or criminals. Some people are wary. Here are some examples I found on Google:

A malicious virus known as Remote Administration Tools (RATs) can be used by hackers to switch on your webcam and control the machine without your knowledge.

The trojans that can take over your camera AND MICROPHONE have been around for almost as long as online cameras have been. GPSs can also be commandeered, and actually anything that is installed in the system is open to exploits. Remember too that your mobile phone can also be used as an audio bug without any part of it indicating that this is happening (no lights or display etc.). The only way to guard against this is to remove the battery because many models can still be hijacked when “switched off”.

There is the assumption around that government agencies ensure that these weaknesses remain in the system because they tend to be the ones that use them the most. Of course now that they are coming out and discussing this exploit I think it safe to assume that they have better options in the arsenal now and don’t care about this capability. All of it has been known in the hacker community for decades now though.

He’s right, I saw an article posted about this a couple years ago concerning the fake cell phone towers popping up, and how they can use your phone’s microphone as a two way listening device. The same can be done with webcams, as Assange and Snowden’s documents indicated they’ve already gotten into Skype, Google and Yahoo.

Or is your argument that Obama and Clinton’s handling of foreign affairs has been criticized so much that it can’t possibly be that bad? Rather weak argument there.

Ordinarily, if one wants to insist that Obama and Clinton aren’t so bad, they’d provide examples of what they did right. Perhaps I can help you out…

Clinton did wonders for the foundation and Bill’s speaking fees while secretary of state.

She didn’t overload the state department’s email servers, either.

And, when she went to fund Syrian opposition groups, she didn’t trouble her own state department to check out those groups for possible Al Qaida connections. Two of those groups that got US funding were associated with Al Qaida. They pretty much got kicked out of Al Qaida for being too brutal (!), and they formed ISIS instead. Not to worry, folks. Hillary is on the job.

Obama… did such a great job on the initial Syrian crisis, that Putin jumped in just to congratulate him on being such a great statesman. Putin was so taken with Obama’s strength, that he sawed off Crimea from Ukraine by marching troops in, just to impress Barry. Sort of like Hinkley shooting Reagan to impress Jodie Foster.

Obama and Clinton both went into Libya to get them out from under the thumb of a dictator. Then, just like Bush, they failed to plan for the aftermath. Today, Libya is essentially a lawless country, run by a series of warlords. The level of killing is now substantially higher than it was under the dictator. But, at least they’re free to kill each other now.

Obama did cheer up the French by telling them that ISIS was contained… two days before the Paris attacks.

He then went to the UK and made veiled threats to cut their trade deals if they exited the EU. Looks like Barry is trying to balance out meddling in ME countries, by meddling in the UK’s affairs – equal opportunity arrogance.

So, it appears that Clinton’s claim that she has extensive experience is true. What she has experience in doing, though… may not be optimal for a global leader.

If we take the Syrian refugees as a primary cause for her death, and that does appear to be the case, you might want to follow that thought through and find out why those Syrians were refugees.

Syria brewed up into open civil warfare in the 2010-2012 time frame, it was their failed attempt to reproduce the Arab Spring that swept Egypt. Barack Obama fumbled the handling of the rising Syrian crisis badly, giving Vladimir Putin the opening he needed to boost his own standings, and eventually to begin wholesale carpet bombing in support of Assad.

And ISIS? It formed about that time, with a good deal of support to it’s precursor groups coming from… Hillary Clinton’s state department. There were warnings that the groups they were backing might be suspect in their motives, but Clinton’s state dept ignored those warnings and continued their financial and material support.

I don’t think Trump’s ham fisted ideas would improve the situation in Syria any. But, the alternative to Trump and her boss played a large role in creating the mess that got Syrians to want to leave.

Course people have learned from history and people care about their rights? Are you one of those who have nothing to hide and so to fear? And only out of interest, why do you trust people who have no problem to brake the Constitution or invade other countries based on lies?

History has clearly shown us why a Gov/regime which is limiting our rights is the biggest problem, because they have much more possibilities then any criminal who is not in power to change laws, start wars, put your into prison, uses the msm media against you inclusive the uncritical part of the populous. Hope that made clear why many have decided to put something on their webcam. And if you are not doing it for yourself, do it for your wife, children or guests. They have a right of privacy and who knows how that data will be used one day if needed. Goebbels used to say: “If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.” Many people had something to hide starting with their religion, political views,….. and as they understood what Goebbel was speaking about, it was too late for too many of them.

The government goes way over the edge and becomes “radical” itself- like what they did to Martin Luther King. The government should fear the people not the other way around- that is what the founding fathers said. That said, there are many ways to protect oneself from prying eyes. Thanks to Assange and Snowden we have a clearer picture of exactly how tyrannical government can get and it’s illbegotten connections to corrupt corporations.\

Those who would give up their freedom for a little security, deserve neither (Ben Franklin).

Yes, this is why there were mass protests in LA during Clinton’s visit.

Listen you and I and anyone else who takes a large world view knows that when terrorists are blamed that the bigger picture is that America’s actions overseas laid the groundwork for what happens in the West.

Unfortunately it is. (That is what you have now)

After 2020, what will be the most likely direction for the US?
Same direction as now. Downward

Consider the current crops of political fools shown up for the idiots they are.

Is it even possible that there will emerge some person who knows what this country is about and follow through on it?
Yes, but how many would recognise such a person? It’s unfortunate that it’s more effective to tear down your opponents credibility than argue with their ideas, and this seems to be the mainstay of your political system.

It will probably be some governor. Certainly not some know-nothing senator like hildebeast or Zerobawna.
Again, how would you recognise this person? Too well funded, and he’s controlled by his backers. Not well funded, and he wan’t make it to the primaries.

This country has a few centuries of greatness left – who will make it happen?
Your political system is rather worn out – everyone at each others throats, leaders dominated by blowards and bought by bankers and special interests.

I think you need a revolution, but I don’t think you’re up to it.

BTW “Hildabeast” was my invention a few months ago. I see it has caught on I would have made a nickname for Trump but it wasn’t necessary- as there are enough of those around! I did call him Mr. Agent Orange awhile back……

Goebbels, Riefenstahl and others have used propaganda, like others before and after them. The communist propaganda was not much better. I had to paint pictures for our Russian “friends” before every summer holiday in eastern germany and I didn´t understood why they are our friends because I didn´t knew them and why footsoldiers and our brothers and sisters on the other side of the wall were our “enemies”, I am fine with speaking about the nazi time here in Germany, but we should see it more as in universal lesson for all of us independent of nationality and political point of views

To say economics “is not a hard science” is flattering it. The words “economics” and “science” should not be mentioned in the same sentence; in fact, there is no connection between the two.

And yet, as you say, that’s how he world works. It is, of course, a giant confidence trick used by those who have most to profit from the collapse of monetary systems.
Economics is much more closely associated with politics than it is science. Maybe that is why we have such close corporate political ties. Although I will add that corporations try their best to bring science under their control too.
